What vehicles fit in a storage container?
The constraint on vehicle storage in containers is almost never the length — it is the height of the door opening. A standard container door is roughly 2.3m wide and 2.3m high. Cars and bikes go through that without thinking about it. Anything tall does not, and it is better you know that here than after driving across Leeds.

Why is a container better than an open compound?
Most “vehicle storage” around Leeds means a marked space in a fenced yard. That is cheaper, and it leaves your car outside in Yorkshire weather, visible to anyone who can see over the fence.
- Out of sight entirely. A closed steel container tells a passer-by nothing about what is inside.
- Out of the weather. No frost on the paint, no sun on the dash, no leaves in the vents.
- Your own lock, your own space. Nobody parks next to you and opens their door into your wing.
- Room for the rest of it. Wheels, parts, tools and a workbench's worth of kit fit behind the car in a 40ft.
- Every entry logged. ANPR reads the plate at the gate, so access is recorded against a vehicle.
Storing a classic or project car
A few things that matter more for a car sitting still than for one being driven. A container is unheated, so it tracks outside temperature and will not be bone dry all year — plan for that rather than assume it away.
- Wash and dry the car before it goes in. Road salt left on paint over a winter is the classic mistake.
- A breathable cover, not a plastic sheet — plastic traps condensation against the paint.
- Battery on a maintainer, or disconnected and taken home.
- Tyres up to the correct pressure, or slightly over, to reduce flat spots.
- Fuel tank close to full to limit condensation in the tank.
- Handbrake off with chocks if you are storing it for months, to save the shoes sticking.
- A moisture absorber or two inside the container, checked when you visit.
Tax, SORN and insurance — the boring but important part
A vehicle kept off the public road must either stay taxed or be declared SORN with the DVLA. Storing it in a container counts as off-road, so if you are letting the tax lapse, make the SORN declaration — it is free and takes a few minutes online.
Insurance is two separate things and people routinely conflate them. Any cover we arrange for stored goods is not motor insurance for your vehicle. Most insurers offer a reduced “laid up” policy for a stored vehicle, which typically covers fire and theft but not use on the road. Ring your insurer, tell them it is going into a locked container in a gated, CCTV-monitored yard with 24/7 staff, and ask what that does to the premium — the security usually helps.
Access and getting in
You get in 24/7 from the app, and the yard is hardstanding throughout, so you drive to your own door in any weather. The site is in Holbeck, just off the M621 at Junction 2, about a mile from Leeds city centre — a short run rather than a trip out past the ring road.
