Student storage in Leeds

If your tenancy ends in June and the next one starts in September, a 10ft container in Holbeck holds a room's worth of belongings over the summer instead of you hauling it all home and back. Split one between housemates and the cost divides with it. Access is 24/7 from your phone, and registering needs no deposit and no credit check.

Why Leeds students need summer storage

Most Leeds student tenancies run about 11 months, ending in late June or early July, with the next one starting in September. That leaves a gap where your things have nowhere to be. The usual options are all bad: pay rent through a summer you are not there, drive everything to your parents' and back, or bin a working desk and a decent mattress and buy them again in autumn.

A container over the summer costs less than the extra rent, and far less than replacing the furniture. If you are an international student it is the difference between a summer at home and a summer of shipping costs.

Cheap student storage: share a unit with housemates

This is the bit most people miss. A 10ft container is about 80 sq ft — comfortably a room's worth of belongings, and often two rooms' if you are sensible about stacking. A 20ft is about 160 sq ft, which is a whole shared house.

Sharing betweenSizeWhat fitsCost each

Two housemates10ftTwo rooms, packed sensiblyHalf each
Three or four20ftA whole shared houseA quarter to a third each
A full 5–6 bed house20ft or 40ftEverything, with room to moveA fifth or less

Access runs through the app rather than one shared key, which is what makes sharing actually work — nobody has to be the person who holds the padlock key all summer. Tell us at sign-up who needs access.

Getting here from Hyde Park, Headingley and Woodhouse

The site is in Holbeck, about a mile south-west of the centre, just off the M621 at Junction 2. From the north-side student areas you come through or around the centre and over the river.

  • Hyde Park and Woodhouse — through the centre, about 3 miles.
  • Headingley — through the centre or round the ring road, about 3 miles.
  • City centre flats (LS1, LS2) — straight down Water Lane or Whitehall Road, about a mile.
  • Burley and Kirkstall — about 3 miles via the ring road or the centre.

Worth being straight about: this is a drive-up yard, so you need a vehicle for moving day — a mate with a car, a parent, a man-with-a-van, or a small hire van shared between the house. It is not a walk-and-carry site, and pretending otherwise would waste your time.

What can you store in a student storage unit?

Fine: beds and mattresses, desks and chairs, boxes of books and clothes, kitchen equipment, bikes, sports kit, TVs and monitors in their boxes, and anything else you would rather not replace in September.

Not fine: food of any kind, anything damp, anything flammable, and anything you legally cannot store. The containers are wind- and watertight but unheated, so also think twice about instruments with wooden bodies — a guitar is better off at home.

Packing for a summer in a container

  1. Everything completely dry before it goes in — a damp towel in a sealed box for ten weeks is a lost box.
  2. Clothes in bags inside boxes, not bin bags alone — bags tear and slump.
  3. Mattress upright against a side wall in a breathable cover, not flat on the floor.
  4. Boxes on pallets or battens rather than straight onto the steel floor.
  5. Label the side facing the doors. In September nobody remembers what is in box four.
  6. Bike upright and locked, even inside the unit — good habit, costs nothing.

Student storage questions

Is there storage near Leeds University or Leeds Beckett?
Qube is in Holbeck, south-west of the centre and about 3 miles from the main north-side campuses and student areas — one straightforward drive rather than walking distance. We are closer to the city centre than most Leeds self storage, which sits out on the ring road.
Can I store just for the summer?
Yes, that is the standard student case. The founding half-price-for-6-months deal covers a summer comfortably and works out cheaper than a short rolling rate. Rates are published when we open in autumn 2026.
Do I need a credit check or a guarantor?
Not to register — no deposit, no card details, no credit check, nothing to cancel. We will confirm what is needed to actually move in along with the rates, but this is storage rather than a tenancy, so it is a much lighter process than renting a house.
Can I share a unit with my housemates?
Yes, and it is the cheapest way to do it. Two people in a 10ft or four in a 20ft both work well. Access is app-based, so each person can have their own, and nobody is stuck being the keyholder.
What if my new tenancy starts later than expected?
Then you keep the unit a bit longer — that is easier to sort than a tenancy extension. Email us and we will work with your dates rather than hold you to an arbitrary end.

Qube opens in autumn 2026, so we cannot cover summer 2026. Register your interest — free, no card details — and you will have rates and the opening date first, with founding-member terms held for you.
